World Cancer Research Fund
The World Cancer Research Fund is a leading authority on the links between diet, weight, physical activity and cancer prevention. Their research and public awareness campaigns empower individuals and influence global policy around cancer prevention. In 2017, we started working closely with WCRF to deliver technical support, design and functional enhancements, and ongoing development for their Drupal-based websites. In 2020 we undertook an extensive redesign and rebuild porting over all their Drupal assets to WordPress, reducing ongoing overheads and streamlining the administration process at the same time. We also instituted a WordPress based maintenance tool-set which ensured their sites were continually up-to-date and monitored in real-time for malware and downtime issues. ensuring a high-performing, accessible digital experience that reflects their global impact
The client’s primary objectives included:
- Flexible page creation
Developing intuitive tools to allow content editors to build complex, visually rich pages without developer input—enabling greater agility and editorial control - Drupal upgrade & UX improvements
Initially upgrading their sites from Drupal 7 to Drupal 9, with a fresh new front-end experience that prioritised mobile responsiveness, clarity, and accessibility - Migration to WordPress of all their Drupal based sites
A thorough technical and functional audit, redesign, rebuild and deployment of WCRF’s three main sites from Drupal to WordPress - Third-party system integrations
Connecting the websites with key tools including their CRM, email marketing, and donation systems to streamline workflows and enhance campaign performance - Data protection & international compliance
Ensuring the website and data practices remained fully compliant with GDPR and other international data regulations, with robust user privacy controls in place
Drupal version upgrades, WordPress migration, donation funnel tooling, and bespoke front-end health tools and calculators
We were initially approached to provide an external full scale audit of the clients Drupal based assets. We were then brought on board to oversee the technical delivery of the audit findings and to work with WCRF on their ongoing digital road-map, transitioning the organisation to a modern, scalable Drupal 9 platform. In 2019 we worked with the client on a strategic basis facilitating the decision to move the suite of sites away from Drupal to WordPress based on improving administration tooling, reducing the ongoing cost of ownership, and opening the site up to a larger developer and supplier community. The move also facilitated the improvement in security standards, disaster recovery planning, and ongoing maintenance processes and standards.
A core deliverable for the client team was the development of a flexible content editing interface, allowing the WCRF team to create bespoke pages for campaigns, research, and events without technical help, empowering their communications team to respond more quickly to public health issues and research milestones. Another core deliverable was the design and delivery of a portable multi-functional donation tool-set to allow the client to accept donations in multiple currencies, from any part of any page on the site, and to replicate the functionality across their suite of sites, with the addition of tailored user fields and conditional logic to suit the campaign and positioning on the site.
We’ve also supported the organisation’s international remit by maintaining multilingual functionality, integrating third-party tools, and ensuring compliance with evolving data and privacy standards.
Project achievements
The initial Drupal 9 upgrade and accompanying UX enhancements led to improved engagement metrics, including a marked reduction in bounce rate and longer time spent on key information pages. The later migration away from Drupal to WordPress enhanced the admin tool-set, providing the team with benefits from more efficient workflows, a more intuitive CMS experience, and faster rollout of content updates.
Our work with WCRF has included ongoing Drupal, WordPress and server maintenance, digital strategy advice, and future planning to help expand their online impact and support global cancer prevention efforts.
“Our projects have been a huge success and we’ve had nothing but positive feedback from across our organisation and externally. We are incredibly grateful for the hard work and dedication Pedalo put in.We look forward to continuing to work with them.”
