The Chartered Institute of Public Relations is the world’s only Royal Chartered professional body for public relations practitioners, dedicated to promoting professionalism, ethical conduct, and excellence in communication. As part of their ongoing digital transformation, CIPR approached us to help streamline their member onboarding and payment processes through their Drupal website.
Our work focused on designing and delivering an enhanced user experience, ensuring the joining journey was intuitive, seamless, and secure – from registration to payment confirmation.
The client’s primary objectives included:

Creating a clear and intuitive multi-step joining process to reduce friction and support users at every stage - Flexible integration with CRM and payment systems
Ensuring secure, seamless integration with third-party platforms including their CRM, Direct Debit setup, and online payment gateway - Improved user interface
Designing a clean and responsive front-end that’s easy to navigate across all devices - Customisable admin functionality
Allowing the CIPR team to edit messaging, manage memberships, and make content updates without technical support

CIPR’s legacy joining process was overly complex, resulting in user drop-offs and administrative overhead. Working closely with their internal team, we reimagined the entire flow – from initial member registration through to payment and account setup.
Our team developed a bespoke multi-step joining journey, underpinned by a fully customised Drupal module. We ensured the process aligned with CIPR’s branding and compliance requirements while integrating securely with their back-office systems. The solution included API integrations with the CRM, a Direct Debit provider, and an online payment gateway, offering users flexibility and assurance when signing up.
CIPR’s internal team was also empowered through improved back-end tools – allowing them to easily edit text, update messaging, and configure options within the joining process without requiring developer input.
Project achievements
The newly redesigned member on-boarding journey was met with extremely positive feedback from users and internal stakeholders alike. Drop-off rates substantially decreased, whilst successful completion of the joining process significantly increased.
The streamlined experience, enhanced admin flexibility, and secure integrations significantly improved operational efficiency and user satisfaction – supporting CIPR’s mission to grow its membership and promote professional standards in public relations.
